As Mother’s Day approaches I can feel all the emotions building up inside me. My mom and I have never had the best relationship. Right now we don’t have a relationship. I had to create a new boundary for my own good.
I miss her sometimes though. You know, the moments when you just want to be mothered and cared for. You think that’s what you need. Someone to be there for you. Someone to fix, fix, fix.
The truth is you need to be there for yourself. You need to care for yourself enough as to find your way into adulthood with honesty and a sense of responsibility that is true to yourself.
Being away from her has created space within me. In getting to know the self from no other perspective than my own I have actually learned empathy for her. I can feel the healing taking place. It doesn’t ever happen as expected. There’s a lot of pain involved.
All human relationships are complicated. Perfect or normal doesn’t exist.
